WHAT IS DRAGONBOATING?

The Legend of Dragonboating

Dragonboating is an ancient Chinese sport dating back more than 2000 years. It is a relatively new sport in the United States, with popularity growing every year. There are currently eight Dragonboat teams in Philadelphia consisting of both men and women paddlers. Dragonboat racing consists of 22 athletes in a 38-foot canoe-type boat. Twenty are paddlers, seated two abreast, who paddle in unison to the beat of a drum. A steersperson stands in the rear and guides the boat, while the drummer sits at the bow directing the pace for the paddlers.

During competitions, the boat is outfitted with a dragon’s head in the front, a tail in the back, and a large drum (think kettle drum) in the front of the boat. As we race, the drummer beats the drum to keep all the paddlers in sync.
